about us
We are a group of graduate students, postdocs, and other people
loosely affiliated to the academic world, who spend time together to help
each other integrate our faith and our vocation.
It is good to have people to talk to about not only our faith, but
who also share in similar challenges and joys that we do in
academia. We welcome newcomers; we'd love to have you join us. Please
drop us a line.
For those who do not follow Jesus yet, we are willing to be a resource to
help you make this important decision. We believe that we have a role as ambassadors of Christ.
Practically, this can mean providing a unique perspective on important issues informed by a
Christian worldview. It can mean dialoging on the particulars of our faith.
It can mean setting an example of service and humble leadership. We strive to be community which
closely reflects Christ.
For those who consider themselves Christian, we do not consider ourselves a replacement
for church, but a complementary organization tailored to academic issues and sympathetic to
the unique trials of graduate school, postdoctoral work, and professorship.
Our goal is to eliminate the potential dichotomy between faith and vocation;
we hope for academic Christians to fully integrate their beliefs into their daily lives and
make use of their minds to glorify God. As a community, we support each other both in pursuing God
and our careers.
Here is our group's vision statement:
|
"Unified through Christ and compelled by His love, we as Christian
graduate students and post-docs of the San Diego academic community,
seek to live out our callings by loving the Lord our God with all of our
heart, with all of our mind, with all of our soul, and with all of our
strength and by loving our neighbors as ourselves (Matt. 22:37-38).
We come together as individuals to pursue an intimate, ever-deepening
relationship with God that extends to all aspects of our lives. As we
are transformed into His likeness, we are motivated by a growing passion
for His kingdom, a desire to surrender our lives in uncompromising
obedience to His will, and a yearning to experience and worship God with
our whole beings.
We come together as a body to share our lives, strengthen our faith, and
affirm our callings, so that we may be encouraged and built up in the
image of Christ, enabling us to step into our intended place as members
of the one body under the lordship of Christ.
We come together as a witnessing community to declare the grace and
reflect the glory of God among the campus community and to serve the
world around us with an attitude of sacrificial (agape) love."

We are affiliated with Intervarsity Christian
Fellowship, which is a national Christian organization for
college and post-college ministry.

our leadership
Although Intervarsity staff for the Southern California region play an advisory role, we are a self-directed organization.
While we welcome the wide participation and initiative of all GCF members, the leadership team exists to establish a
general direction for the group and to ensure that events and activities are well-organized.
(This does not imply that GCF leadership holds particular spiritual superiority or authority over other members of the group.)
The leadership team draws from a variety of backgrounds and academic disciplines.
